I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: B8B8B8; border: #550505 solid 4px; width: 400px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]
The Three Broomsticks.
He was already a regular and he’d only been stationed in Hogsmeade for a couple of days. Daniel Drake couldn’t decide if that was a bad thing or a good thing. Clearly he was spending way too much time drinking Firewhiskey when he should be off patrolling or doing whatever the hell it was he was supposed to be doing. Ah, and there lies the problem. What was there to do? Hogwarts was more or less impenetrable, and he wasn’t seeing any dark wizards roaming the streets of Hogsmeade. Spending his time ordering drinks and making small talk with some of the locals was the only thing to do.
Daniel was starting to wonder who he had pissed off in order to deserve this. He had thought he must be on good terms with his boss, the famous Harry Potter himself, when the older man had recruited him to join the Order of the Phoenix. It had seemed like a great idea at the time, a real way to get in on the action and take out some dark wizards. Had he known it would lead to this, he might have reconsidered the offer. Apparently by agreeing to join the Order, it also had automatically made him a perfect candidate to keep an eye on Hogwarts. Potter seemed to be big on keeping the school safe, but with things having been pretty quiet lately and the term just barely getting started, Drake was the only Auror stationed there currently. It seemed like rookie work to him.
Still, he never had been one to spend a lot of time complaining. If they wanted to pay him to sit around and drink, he didn’t see a problem with it. He just hoped he wouldn’t have to spend too long of a time doing this kind of thing, otherwise he was going to go crazy with having nothing to do. It wasn’t like he was going to end up making any friends or anything like that, though there was a pretty bartender that had caught his eye…it wasn’t as if he would be opposed to having one fun night…
Speaking of which… Daniel’s piercing blue eyes wandered down the length of the counter, finding the said woman down at the other end. ”Could I get another glass of Firewhiskey down here?” he called out. He had already had one glass, and then taken the time to smoke a cigarette in between. Another wasn’t going to hurt, it took more than two glasses to get him tipsy. The young Auror hardly cared that this was probably something he shouldn’t be doing a lot of. He wouldn’t want to go through withdrawal symptoms or something. If they thought he was bad enough to deal with now, they’d hate to see him going over 24 hours without a drink or smoke.
As he waited for his drink, he turned his head, gazing around the rest of the area. The Three Broomsticks was rather quiet tonight, only a couple of other people were around. All of them were locals or Hogwarts staff…nothing out of the ordinary going on. He found the quiet to be quite nice, actually. However, it only reconfirmed his suspicions that this was going to be a very, very boring assignment. ”Merlin help me,” he grumbled under his breath.

Marie Sinclair strutted down the 'streets' of Hogsmeade trying impeccably hard to keep her nose up and her heels from from getting caught on the old stone pathway that lead to the Three Broomsticks. She only owned two types of shoes. Heels, and a single pair of athletic shoes. She could have easily changed in those sneakers but how odd would it be to walk through Hogsmeade in a long blazer layered over a light pink camisol and navy pencil skirt, especially when those shoes were a mixture of black and bright red. Not to mention if she was caught by her students wearing those. She had an image to uphold among them.
It was a new year at Hogwarts and Marie already felt as if she needed a break. Christmas was several months away still resorting her to having a drink or two at the infamous pub in Hogsmeade. It wasn't even her first years that were the problem. They were already both scared and fascinated by her. The third and fourth years were the real threat. Those times that children go through puberty seem to send them a message that reset all their memories. Rules, homework, whatever. It was all out the window for them. Thankfully it would hit them in their fifth year when they had to take the O.W.L's. Then listening and doing well was important.
Marie pushed open the door to the pub and walked in, sighing a breathe of relief that she did not end up face planting on her way over. She took a seat at the bar and ordered a firewhiskey before muttering, "Bloody hell," as the craziness of the new term rushed around in her mind. It was almost agonizing to think that she would have to put up with these kids for so many more months to come. Why had she become a teacher?
Her usual sarcastic grin spread on her lips. She knew exactly why. She had hated her own teachers when she had gone to school, and although they had influenced much of her dark attitude, she still wanted to have students that actually liked her teachings. She had created a strict, yet seductive, yet somehow still friendly atmosphere in her class and since all those pubescent teens were her problem, she hoped their realization of this would soon kick in.
A grumble next to her tore her mind off of Hogwarts and teaching for a moment as she looked to her left and the blue eyes of the auror that was stationed in the area caught her attention. Daniel Drake. He was a member of the Order so she knew his face rather well, maybe not him, but she remembered faces well. She scoffed at the amazing job he was doing patrolling for dark wizards.
"Well, well, Mr. Drake," she began informally, pausing to take a sip of her drink. "The dark wizards must be catching themselves today." She realized the chance of one of them even attempting to infiltrate Hogwarts at this point was quite low, but a playful tease would do no harm. She could see the boredom on his face, and would probably feel the same way if she was set to a task that would be eventful only once a year. And that was even a maybe. "I must say, I wish my students would teach themselves some days."

It was only natural for Daniel to look up when he heard the door open. After all, he had been trained to have constant vigilance, and heaven forbid some sort of Death Eater or something snuck up on him. Yes, there were definitely an abundance of those in Hogsmeade. Yes, he was feeling quite sarcastic towards the whole situation, wasn’t he? He really just couldn’t understand why it was that he of all people had been chosen for such a boring assignment. He would be much more useful elsewhere, actually hunting down dark wizards… Try not to complain, though he might, it was going to be some time before he was able to get over this one.
He instantly recognized the woman that entered. Marie Sinclair was a hard woman not to recognize. Deputy Headmistress at Hogwarts and a member of the Order to boot. Not to mention, she was certainly a sight for sore eyes. He watched her curiously for a moment, wondering how it was that she could be here to order a drink already. Was the new school year that rough already? Of course, Daniel didn’t care enough to ask her, and he kept his eyes focused on the now-half empty glass in front of him, pulling his black cloak up towards his head as if doing so might hide his face.
Obviously this was not to do him any good, for Marie addressed him moments later. He didn’t know her that well at all, honestly, but he supposed there were worse people he could be talking to right now. Granted, he would prefer to not talk to anyone but he supposed she wasn’t so bad. He actually rolled his eyes at her comment, letting out a sarcastic ‘ha’ under his breath. ”Actually, this place is swarming with dark wizards. I just happened to have caught them all already,” he shot back, eyes narrowing slightly. Well, maybe it was a bit of an exaggeration. He could find all kinds of criminals over in the Hog’s Head. Still, he doubted that any of them were dark wizard material.
The briefest hint of an amused grin tugged at his lips for a moment at her comment. ”The school year just barely started. It can’t be that bad. Merlin, I’d almost rather take your job over mine right now…well, maybe not,” he said, running a hand through his blonde hair. There was no way he had the patience to deal with a bunch of students. He’d end up killing them all before the first day even had ended. Daniel Drake was most definitely not teacher material.

Marie's eyes darted around the room, taking in all the old, tatter robes witches and wizards in the pub. "Dark wizards, huh?" Most of the magical folk in the pub could probably do very little powerful magic anymore. That is, if they could ever in the first place. Then again, a powerful person doesn't necessarily have to look the part to be it. She supposed one of them could be a dark wizard. She swiveled around putting her back to the bar, and crossing her legs. She leaned back on her arms.
Eyeing Daniel again, Marie snickered. "If these are powerful dark wizards then I must be a god." She was implying that she was a much more powerful witch than any of those in the small building. It most likely wasn't a wrong accusation but it was a rather rude one. However, she was definitely one to be indirectly rude to those around her. It was apart of her nature.
Flicking her hair back behind her shoulders, she took a gulp of her firewhiskey, appreciating she had decided to quit after her auror training and become a teacher. Back then she knew she would just end up like Daniel was now. Running around trying to find wizards on only clues and evidence could often lead to nowhere. She knew someone who had been chasing a man for five years and had just barely caught him at that point.
"I was going to become a auror before I became a teacher," She started, not sure where exactly she was going with her thoughts. He probably had no care about her, but that was good. Marie could probably just talk and Daniel would forget it all the next day. Men were wired that way. "But I thought it seemed pathetic to try and chase down criminals for years on end." She ended the thought abruptly, considering adding a 'no offensive' but deciding against it because it was obviously an offensive statement. If she didn't want to be offensive she wouldn't have said it.
Her sarcastic smile was back. "And no. It's not that bad. The first week is always quite hectic." He wanted her job? Hah. He wouldn't last a day without hexing their little heads off or putting some kind of silencing charm on them. He seemed to have little patience. She added, "Still, I would rather teach the lot spells and counter-curses and see the stupid little grin on their faces than sit around in an office waiting for something to happen and possibly spending months or years finding one person." During the years of the wizarding war, Auror's really weren't on their game and seemed easily outsmarted. Obviously nothing had changed. [/size]

Daniel nodded his head absentmindedly as Marie asked about the dark wizards, preferring to focus on drinking his glass of Firewhiskey at the moment rather than acknowledge her comment. Obviously she could tell he was being sarcastic about there being dark wizards around. There was hardly anyone in the Three Broomsticks and out of the few that were there, none of them were even close to dark wizard material. Honestly, he would sell his left leg to have a dark wizard show up in Hogsmeade. That would give him something to do and would seriously make his day. Nothing else would be able to.
He glanced back over at her as she said that she must be a god. Obviously she wasn’t lacking in self-confidence…he liked that. He raised an eyebrow, watching her thoughtfully for several moments. Finally, he gave a light shrug of his shoulders. ”I suppose it’s possible,” he decided. One didn’t get to be the Deputy Headmistress at Hogwarts by just sitting around and being useless, after all. He had no arguments against her comment…well, except for the fact that he was pretty sure he would beat her in a duel, but he really wasn’t in the mood to argue about something so ridiculous at the moment.
The Auror looked slightly interested as Marie mentioned that she had once had aspirations to become an Auror. She certainly would have made a decent one, he liked to think. Much better than most of the others that seemed to be coming in now and days. However, his interest turned into annoyance as she went on to explain why she wouldn’t want to be an Auror and started more-or-less bashing on them. His eyes narrowed as he watched her. ”That’s hardly how things go. You would know that, were you actually an Auror,” he shot back, bristling slightly. He had caught a couple of big criminals himself, throughout his career. He found it extremely annoying that she had the nerve to actually think that the Aurors didn’t get anything done.
He pushed his now-empty glass aside, refusing to lose his cool in front of this woman. He wasn’t going to give her that satisfaction. ”I mean, I know that’s how things used to be run, back during the war, but it isn’t like that anymore. With Shacklebolt as Minister and Potter as head of the Auror department, we have a much higher success rate,” he informed matter of factly, a hint of a smirk appearing on his face.

Marie scoffed. "I only did the training, and even when I shadowed another auror nothing happened." 'Half of them were too scared to even think of a dark wizard.' She knew she should have more respect for Aurors. They were protectors of the wizarding community, but the memory of their wimpy, little-girl asses put a bad taste in her mouth. It was after the war though, there wasn't much to do. The disbanded Death Eaters were either already in Azkaban, hiding, or had been pardoned by the ministry. She was sure with the famous Harry Potter as Head of the Auror Department, none had been daring to take even a step out of line. For a while there, they really had created an era of peace.
Marie nodded at Daniel's next words. "It's been about twenty years since the war," she stated matter-of-factly before continuing, "I trained about ten years ago and there was still little going on. Even under Potter's reign." She wasn't specifically trying to speak ill-ly of him but there wasn't much of a way to make it not seem that way. She knew Harry Potter quite well, he had even asked several times of her to pose as a spy among the new Dark Souls, but she had refused multiple times on the account of not knowing the intelligence of the new dark wizard leader and knowing that if he could easily break previous death eaters out of azkaban and hide them, he must have a lot of power. Not to mention her parents were only second generation purebloods, make her a third generation, but it was unknown how much of a purist this new alliance was.
She considered adding that it was then, after only a year of being a part of the Order, that Harry Potter had approached her and asked that she teach at Hogwarts. He wanted someone who would quit or get injured by the end of the year. After the war, that's all the children of those classes would try to do. They wanted to uphold the legacy. Of course, Miss Sinclair was easily able to stop that from happening again. She smiled to herself devilishly. Daniel had not asked for her life story though, so Marie decided against adding that last bit and instead added, "Well boredom even for a moment is not something I enjoy, " She motioned to how he was spending his time sitting around, drinking. "At least these students keep me busy from day to day."
A thought occurred to her as she thought of her classes. "Infact, if you'd ever like to teach one of my classes about what it's like being an auror. Feel free to stop by my room any time." Marie was sure her students would enjoy not having her around for a class period. They would probably enjoy it too much. There was a large chance that without her around, those kids would go absolutely nuts with their mouths and voices. It was a rather entertaining thought, and could possibly be an entertaining experience so she decided to put the offer on the table. Chances were, however, that Daniel would refuse it anyway. "My students would probably love to hear about how hard, and tough it was to capture all the dark wizards in this god forsaken pub." She added the last part sarcastically and with a voice that made it seem as though she was poking at the manliness of his job. And that wasn't exactly wrong.

I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: B8B8B8; border: #550505 solid 4px; width: 400px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;]
Daniel just shot Marie a piercing glare, not at all impressed with the things she was saying. He could understand her saying that about the Aurors in the past, but now? He thought they were doing a pretty good job. He was proud to be an Auror and, personally, he thought he did a pretty good job at it. It really was an ideal job for someone like him who liked to be alone and was on the ‘cold’ side. There wasn’t anything else that he could see himself doing with his life. ”Trust me, you have a very vague idea of what goes on in our department,” he informed her, refusing to let her go on about how Aurors were useless.
He let out a sigh, signaling to the woman tending the bar that he needed another drink. With the way Marie was going, unless he gave himself a light buzz, he was going to lose his mind. Despite her pretty looks, she wasn’t doing a great job of impressing him so far. ”I guess I’m a bad example at the moment, but there really is nothing to do right now. Being stationed here to help keep an eye on the castle? That’s rookie work. The only reason Potter wanted me here was because of the Order,” he grumbled, his voice going dropping in volume at the last part. After all, one could never be too sure who might be listening.
Daniel’s eyebrow quirked once more as she talked about being bored. ”If that’s the case and they really do keep you so busy, then how is it that you’re here, just like me at the moment?” he shot back coolly. He was simply trying to point out that she was no better than him at the moment. While he liked the ‘superior’ attitude she had going on, she was really doing a good job of getting on his nerves. However, he actually let out a mixture between a scoff and a chuckle when she suggested he come in to one of her classes. ”No chance in hell of that ever happening,” he informed her without missing a beat. He had better things to do than run around and talk to students about his job. Well, not really, but he definitely wasn’t the type to enjoy that kind of thing. The little prats would probably drive him to insanity.
On the other hand, it would give him something to do. It could be a challenge, maybe even something exciting. That was better than just hanging around here and doing nothing all day. If anything, maybe he could at least prove the lovely, Ms. Sinclair wrong about his job. ”Well, maybe I’ll consider doing it for one of your older classes. We’ll see what happens,” he relented, changing it from an absolute no to a maybe.

Marie began to laugh a rather evil laugh. She could tell her comments were getting on Daniel's nerves. That was good. Most men would just push her comments aside no matter how much they bashed on whatever their 'job' was and try to charm her with their good looks and what they considered to be intelligence. Thankfully, those were not Daniel's intentions. At least not his primary ones.
She sighed. "I may not be working every moment of the day but at least I something to do a majority of the time." There were some days that she woke up doing work and fell asleep doing work but there were also days that she had a few hours of time to herself, and those were moments she cherished because she could finally breathe. "An hour or two of time I have to myself is something to worship." As a second glass of firewhiskey was put in front of her she raised her glass as if giving cheers. "And worship I shall." Marie took a long drink.
"Maybe I'll consider doing it for one of your older classes." Daniel decided. A grin appeared on Marie's face. Something new and interesting would happen this year, at least for one day. And maybe he would even do a fantastic job but it would at least give her students a break and something to think about for the future. Like she did when she was their age, there were probably plenty that had no idea where they wanted to take their future. Marie wondered for a moment why Hogwarts never had some kind of job showcase for the students, but quickly put her mind back into focus.
"Anyway, enough with job talk. We came here to get away from them, yes?" The conversation was going no where fast. Marie didn't have much to say anymore. She didn't follow quidditch, the same old news was still in the paper, and the only thing they really even seemed to have in common was their jobs. It was a dead end, but she wasn't quite ready to take her leave. Perhaps staying on that topic was the only option. "On second thought, I would just love to know what dark wizards you have caught, Mr. Drake." Sarcasm hinted in Marie's voice as usual.

I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: B8B8B8; border: #550505 solid 4px; width: 400px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] Daniel resisted the urge to roll his eyes as Marie simply laughed at him. No, she really wasn’t doing a very good job of impressing him at the current moment. However, he was pretty sure she could care less what he thought of her. The attractive professor had certainly made no means to try and come on to him or anything-something that was slightly disappointing…not that he would ever admit it. It was just going to, most likely, be very boring spending the majority of his time stationed in Hogsmeade. While he wasn’t one to like getting involved with other people, well, he wouldn’t be opposed to a little something that might make it less boring… After all, though infuriating, Marie was rather good looking and he actually sort of liked her firey personality…
He blinked several times, attempting to clear his mind and focus back on the conversation at hand. His thoughts had really started to go wandering there, and that was the last thing he needed right now. ”Exactly, there’s nothing wrong with having some free time. So maybe, in the future, you should be less critical towards those who are doing the exact same thing as you are?” he suggested, though he was mostly just teasing (as much as it was possible for someone like Daniel to joke around). Obviously she was probably working a lot harder than he was…but she didn’t really think he sat around in the little village and did nothing all day, did she? He still made trips to the Ministry and whatnot. He just, sadly, wasn’t being put on any other major assignments aside from this. But there was still plenty of paperwork and other things to be doing.
There was a moment of silence when Marie tried to turn the conversation away from their jobs, and Daniel honestly had no ideas of how to break the silence. It wasn’t like he was one to just chatter away about random things. Of course, he really wasn’t bothered by the silence anyways. Finally, it was broken…but the subject of conversation was more or less where they had first started at. ”Well, let’s be honest. Until recently, there really hasn’t been many dark wizards around. I’ve brought in a few of the former Death Eaters, you know how they always like to rise up and cause trouble every once in a while…a couple of their kids too,” he said, falling silent for a moment as he ran through his mind, remembering the people he had arrested. ”There was that one wizard, a couple of years ago. I’m sure you remember him, he was that one who hung around in the pubs, luring women away and…well, I’m sure you’ve heard the rest. That bloody dirtbag was the first major one I’d ever brought in,” he said.
He could go on and on telling her about people he had arrested over the years but, honestly, none of them were what he would consider as dark wizards. There honestly hadn’t been any truly dark wizards since Voldemort, well, until now that was. The Auror cast another glance around the room, making sure no one was really paying attention to their conversation. ”I have to ask, how did some such as yourself end up involved in the Order anyways? he asked in a quiet voice. The Order hadn’t been reformed for very long, so they’d only had a couple of meetings, but he was genuinely curious as to how Marie had ended up getting involved with it all. Besides, it was the only slightly interesting thing he could think of to talk about at the moment.
